Council Meeting Highlights - October 16, 2024
Strong Governance
Reeve and Deputy Appointments:
- At the Organizational Meeting, Kevin Smook (Reeve), Gene Hrabec (Deputy Reeve), and Lionel Williams (Acting Reeve) were acclaimed for one-year terms ending October 2025. These roles reinforce the County’s commitment to effective leadership and collaboration in serving its residents.
- Council members were also reappointed to various committees, ensuring continuity in representation and decision-making.
Collaborative Partnerships
Letters of Support Policy Approved:
- Council approved a new policy providing guidelines for issuing letters of support for initiatives aligning with the County’s economic development plan and strategic goals. This framework reflects the County’s dedication to fostering partnerships and community growth.
Small Business Week Proclaimed:
- Council recognized Small Business Week, celebrating the vital contributions of small businesses to the County’s economy and local community life.
Support for Town Projects, Council confirmed support for:
- Tofield’s application for a Provincial grant to develop a stormwater management plan.
- Viking’s grant application for a freshwater holding pond and relocation of the water inlet line at the Viking water tower.
These initiatives highlight intermunicipal collaboration without requiring County funding for studies or subsequent work, fostering sustainable regional development.
Lifestyle Enhancement
Community Grants Approved:
- Council approved grants to support organizations across the County, assisting with operating costs, facility enhancements, and program development. This reinforces the County’s core value of empowering community-driven initiatives.
Sustainable Infrastructure
Paragon Theatre Demolition Update:
- Council received an update on the demolition of the Paragon Theatre. The contract has been awarded, and work is set to commence shortly, with completion expected by mid-November. UPDATE Dec 2, 2024: The demolition is still ongoing due to unexpected delays.
Gravel Contracts Awarded:
- Two-year contracts were awarded to McDonald Aggregates Inc. for the supply and stockpiling of crushed gravel, ensuring infrastructure projects are well-supported.
